Summer's the season of days by the beach, BBQs and, yes, binge watching everything you've been putting on the back-burner throughout the busier winter months. We talk about TV shows and movies quite a bit over here, but today I've got something a bit extra for you. I've rounded up 10 of the biggest movie genres - from romance to horror and everything in between - and I'm going to be giving you 2 movie recommendations from each. You're bound to find something new to indulge in!
1. Action
Personally, I prefer my action movies to have a good mix of action (obviously) and plot. Jumanji is a top fave, but if you're looking for something a bit less mainstream, I'd go for The Tuxedo. I mean, who doesn't love a bit of Jackie Chan?
2. Horror
I have to admit, this is one of my favourite genres of all time. Some might disagree, but I highly recommend watching It if you haven't already. But if that's too chill for you, have a look at The Curse of La Llorona. It's a newer one, and the creepiness knob is turned up quite a few notches.
3. Comedy
I get it. Sometimes you just need to have a good old laugh to forget about the crazy times we're living in. A modern classic is definitely Grown Ups. It cracks me up every time I rewatch it. For something a bit different, though, Game Night is also a great option.
4. Science Fiction
We all love a bit of sci-fi, don't we? For this one, I have a couple of true classics coming your way. If you've never watched Back to the Future, you have to give it a go ASAP. Apart from that, Jurassic Park is always a winner.
5. Romance
DO NOT SCROLL PAST THIS if you're not that into romance. Hear me out. The Half of It is a minimal-cheese love story; it's more a story about love as a noun than a story about a particular couple. If you want ALL the cheese, on the other hand, watch (or, let's face it, probably rewatch) To All the Boys I've Loved Before.
6. Thriller
If you want a creepily wonderful experience, then this is the genre for you. The Silence of the Lambs is the psychological thriller of the ages. The Saw series, however, is a thriller in every sense of the word. Just make sure you're mentally prepared for both of these and -warning! - they are not for the faint-hearted.
7. Musical
Ahh, musicals. Some are dark, and some are wonderfully bright and happy. An example of the former is Les Misérables (the live vocals are just a small part of why this movie is so tragically beautiful). If you're looking for something a bit less sombre, though, check out Hairspray. And no, I don't just love it because Zac Efron is in it.
8. Mystery
We've all got an inner detective inside of us struggling to come out. To satisfy that hidden part of you, check out A Simple Favor and Murder Mystery. As expected from this genre, the endings will surely leave you gaping at the screen in front of you.
9. Fantasy
There are so many amazing fantasy movies out there. Avatar is an example of a brilliant one. For something a bit more low-key, though, Status Update is a pretty good movie. It doesn't have the rep some bigger fantasy movies do, but don't knock it 'til you try it.
10. Superhero
Superhero movies are kind of a thing these days. Honestly, this was probably the hardest genre to choose from, because there are so so so many favourites that I had to leave out. Obviously, I can't not mention Avengers: Endgame, and I'm sure you know all the reasons why already. The second shout out has to go to Wonder Woman - especially since the second movie's coming out soon!
I know, I know. Too many options to choose from, right? If you need some extra help to pick your next watch, be sure to take this quick and easy quiz:
