6 Ways to Have a Pandemic-Friendly Halloween

The end of October is looming near, which means that it's officially one of my favourite times of the year.

Okay, now that that (unintentional) cheesy rhyme is out of the way... We all know 2020 has been a pretty scary year in and of itself. And considering the fact that parties are out of the question, I bet a lot of you have decided to just ignore this spooky holiday this time around. But that doesn't have to be the case. There are still plenty of things you could do to instil some Halloween vibes into your weekend. However much effort you want to put in, have a quick look at this list of 6 Halloween-inspired activities you should definitely consider putting on your weekend to-do list:

1. Binge out on candy

Let's face it, there's an inner child in all of us that kind of hates the fact that trick-or-treating is a thing of the past at this age (or a thing of the movies, if you're a fellow Maltese/Gozitan). So what's the harm in satisfying that inner child with a bag full of sugary treats? If anything, you'll be helping the economy by having to visit the dentist come Monday morning.

2. Watch a Halloween-themed movie

Horrors are my personal go-to during this time of year. If you need some recommendations, I'd suggest The Ring (2020), Truth or Dare (2018), or go all-out and binge watch all the Saw movies. If you're in need of some tamer options, I'd go for Hocus Pocus (1993) or Corpse Bride (2005).

3. Read a horror novel

If you'd rather curl up with a blanket and a good book while you pretend it's all dark and gloomy outside in spite of the glaring October sun, why not pick up something within the realm of the horror genre? Any title penned by Stephen King should suffice.

4. Carve a pumpkin

It's the quintessential Halloween activity, but it's a pretty great option if you want to get your creative juices flowing. And the best part is, all that delicious filling you scoop out can be used to create some mouth-watering dishes, which leads me to my next suggestion...

5. Cook/bake something pumpkin-flavoured

From pumpkin soup to pumpkin pie, there is an endless list of dishes - savoury and sweet - that you can try in order to incorporate this festive ingredient. I'm personally really excited to have my first pumpkin soup of the season this weekend. This one's also great if you like getting creative in the kitchen, as you can decorate your favourite treats with some spooky designs that will instantly aestheticise your social media feeds.

6. Go to a local escape room

If you want to go all out, round up a few friends (obviously keeping in mind Covid-19 restrictions) and book an hour at a local escape room. Choose a creepy room for that added Halloween vibe. Not only is it a great bonding experience, it's also awesome if you want to get your brain working a little bit.

So you see, Halloween doesn't have to be cancelled this year. Make the most of what you can do, and if you follow one of the above suggestions, be sure to tag us on Insta @writings_on_the_wall.blog, and have a Happy Halloween!
