I have a love-hate relationship with video games. On the one hand, I cannot fathom the seriousness with which some people take them - I mean, is all that agitation really necessary just because you failed to score a goal in a virtual football game that literally has no repercussions on your actual life? Seriously, it's not good for your heart, guys. On the other hand, I do enjoy a good game every now and then. I really only ever play the same couple of games, but nonetheless, here's my unprofessional review of some PlayStation icons:
1. Fifa
We all knew this was coming, so let's just get it out of the way, shall we? ;)
As I wrote above, I do not appreciate being around someone playing this game; I don't need that kind of stress in my life. With that being said, I do enjoy playing it every once in a while. I used to spend a good ten minutes trying to curate the perfect team, despite my opponents' warnings that I was doing it all wrong. Let me just say, though, the settings are tedious if you're not really that into football, so I mainly just go with the flow and hope for the best (which doesn't usually work out, but oh well).
2. Call of Duty
Here's a little secret: when I want people to think I know what I'm talking about, I use acronyms to sound more knowledgeable than I actually am; so anytime a discussion on PlayStation ensues, I have to put in the term COD at least twice.
In all seriousness, though, I think this game would be my favourite if it weren't for the first-person mode (it legit makes me nauseous within minutes). I love the adrenaline rush, and I appreciate the fact that it's so realistic that I get paranoid someone's going to pop up from behind me.
3. Grand Theft Auto
Of course, this one's another classic, and for good reason, too. In my opinion, GTA's perfect for a chill escape into a virtual world. It kind of worries me that I'm keen on a game which (basically) revolves around larceny and casual murder, but let's not think about that. It's fun to unleash your inner rebel every once in a while, and doing it virtually just takes away all the consequences that doing so in real life has.
4. Red Dead Redemption
Red Dead Redemption was pretty hyped up when it first came out, and in my very humble opinion, it wasn't without good cause. The best way to describe it would be: GTA with a huge dose of Clint Eastwood. The history behind it is probably my favourite part - as a bookworm, I love being transported to different times and places, and this game ticks all the right boxes in the storytelling department. The hype needs to be brought back, please.
I hope this post doesn't encourage you to play too many video games during this exam season, but instead what you should do is check out our Instagram (@writings_on_the_wall.blog)!
Seriously, though, good luck if you have any exams/assignments this month. Go get 'em!
