Alternative Saturday Night Plans (Covid-19 Edition)

"Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans" - John Lennon

Reader, it seems as if there won’t be many parties taking place in the next month or two *sobs*. It’s not the end of the world, however, because we can make new plans. There are several other ways one can enjoy a delightful Saturday summer night. These can still easily be ones to remember, and I’m here to suggest how:

1. Camping

Here in Malta, the full camping experience often includes swimming, BBQing, some beer, and sleeping in a tent with a few friends or family members. Frankly, this might easily beat a party any day. There’s nothing quite like the smell of pork (or vegan, why not?) sausages after a good swim. And there’s equally nothing like s’mores on an August or September night. One might even ‘pull a Camp Rock 2’ and sit around a campfire. If you do choose to do this though, just be cautious of helplessly bursting into song – or to be more specific – into ‘This is Our Song’. Staying up late talking or playing a card game in one’s tent sounds good as well.

2. Late-night swim

Simply having a late-night dip with some friends can feel like an adventure. It may be dark, but you’d have the beach all to yourself, and this is likely to make for a very memorable summer highlight.

3. Sippin’ some wine and stargazing

This one right here is a fairly underrated activity. A sky full of stars is art, and it should never go unappreciated. Grab a glass of wine and celebrate the natural nighttime beauty that surrounds you. Who knows, you might even witness a shooting star, there to make all your wishes come true. Were this to actually happen, let’s agree to collectively wish for Covid-19 to be over, shall we?

4. Movie/Game night

Inviting some friends over to your humble abode for a movie and some games is another interesting alternative. Invest in some popcorn and snacks, turn to your favourite movies and board games, and a good time will surely be guaranteed. If all else fails, try karaoke, and trust me, you’ll have the time of your life.

5. Ice-cream date

They say ice-cream goes to the heart rather than the stomach. So plan a date with your boyfriend/girlfriend/friend/family member and go make your heart happy. Indulging in something sweet with some sweet company always ensures a sweet night.

If you’re quite the party animal, I can imagine your disappointment at the turn of events. Let's take care of our health, however, and let's enjoy our weekends in a safe (yet still fun) way.
