Beach Please: Top 5 Underrated Beaches in Gozo

“To escape and sit quietly on the beach – that’s my idea of paradise.” – Emilia Wickstead

With temperatures now soaring, a quiet day at the beach does sound like paradise. Such paradise is in fact very reachable here in Gozo, but in this regard, many fail to appreciate our less popular, yet just as beautiful, beaches. Today, I invite you to turn your attention to beaches other than the famous Marsalforn Beach and Ramla l-Ħamra, and to give some love to our island's hidden and unappreciated gems.

1. Wied l-Għasri

One arrives at this beach upon descending a set of steps somewhere between Għasri and Marsalforn. Warning: When going back up, these steps may or may not be exhausting, and you may or may not need a second to catch your breath. This being said, I can guarantee that it's worth it - the (positively) breathtaking view definitely makes up for being (negatively) out of breath. This beach is usually also super quiet, perfect for a day of relaxation by the sea.

2. Xatt l-Aħmar

Forming part of Għajnsielem, this is another not-so-popular, but very beautiful, beach. With its tranquilising waters, this is perfect not only for an enjoyable dip, but also for enjoying a packed lunch or take-out in a serene environment. Also, if you’re into diving, this is the place for you, because it is a prime diving site as well. It's safe to say that the view of the beach is not the only beautiful sight here, because the ones found underwater are just as captivating. After a day by the beach, one also has the opportunity to drive down to Mġarr for some ice-cream, since there isn't much distance between the two.

3. Dwejra Inland Sea

Since we can no longer enjoy the Azure Window, we might as well appreciate everything else that makes Dwejra so gorgeous. I believe that the Inland Sea plays an important part in this. Undoubtedly, swimming, or else sunbathing, in such a beautiful and relaxing atmosphere makes for an equally beautiful and relaxing day. Alternatively, one can also rent a boat, absorbing the beautiful scenery on-board.

4. Ta' Bumbarin

You may have never heard of this place, or you may have heard of it as 'Ta' Bemberejnnn'. This is an area which is very close to Ħondoq ir-Rummien in terms of its whereabouts, but not at all close to it in terms of the amount of people occupying the beach. In fact, if you go down to Ħondoq ir-Rummien and find that it's packed, all you have to do is take a little walk (I have to warn you though, you'll have to walk, and perhaps even climb, through a very rocky environment). But, yet again, it is totally worth it. I mean, these pictures themselves radiate peacefulness, let alone the beach itself.

5. Gorgun Beach

This one is not simply underrated, but also undiscovered by many. This beach is located in Imġarr, a little farther from the Gozo Channel offices. Once again, you'll find steps (but these are definitely less exhausting than the ones in Wied l-Għasri, don't worry). Then, you'll see (most often) very clear waters which will simply urge you to swim. Here, even the sound of the waves crashing against the shore will induce you to leave your busy and stressful world behind, escaping to a more relaxing and serene one. And of course, this is again super close to where the ice-cream trucks are.

So keep these beaches in mind, dear reader, if you're looking for something different, somewhere peaceful, and some good ice-cream. Let us never fail to discover and appreciate our Gozitan beauty to the full. Which are your favourite underrated beaches?
