Cupid's Curation: What to Read/Watch this Valentine's

"Every great love starts with a great story" - Nicholas Sparks

This weekend, Cupid will be busy with his bow and arrow, people will be swarming into flower shops, and most will be celebrating love.

(...perhaps in today's world Cupid might be using more modern technological means ⬆)

Now some may look at Valentine's day through heart eyes and some may see it as a cringefest. For this reason, I tried my best to balance my list in terms of cheesiness, while still paying homage to love... (I may or may not have succeeded 🧀).

Here goes nothing:

1. To All the Boys I Loved Before

You guys can indulge in this story either through reading the trilogy or watching the famous films, the third of which comes out February 12th; just in time for the big day!

To all the boys reading this - if you ever do get round to watching this, pay extra attention to Lara Jean's style; maybe it will inspire you in terms of a cute and inexpensive V-day gift (cough, scrunchie, cough).

2. Bridgerton

Since we're on the topic of books adapted to the screen and of relatively new releases, my next recommendation is the Netflix series Bridgerton. It takes us back to 1813, when love was typically synonymous with arranged marriages. Kind of makes us not want to take the liberty of choosing our Valentinus for granted, doesn't it, my Lord/Lady?

3. Anything Nicholas Sparks

In my humble opinion, Nicholas Sparks is a master at composing incomparable love stories. If you've never read a novel of his, I highly recommend that you take the opportunity to do so this Valentine's Day, because although the movies based on his books are masterpieces as well, he has such a beautiful way with words. My personal favourite Sparks story is The Notebook, and now that we're mentioning it, I should probably consider watching it for the gazillionth time this weekend.

4. Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre, apart from being one of my favourite novels, is a timeless classic which is so much more than a love story. The book is especially beautifully-written and empowering: "I am a bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will", but the film is also really good.

5. Valentine's Day

Taylor Swift, Taylor Lautner, Patrick Dempsey, Anne Hathaway, and Ashton Kutcher, all in one movie that is dedicated to Valentine's Day and its ups and downs... I don't know about you but this is totally on my list this Valentine's Day.

Having given you a list of stories that will hopefully get you in the Valentine's day spirit, I cannot omit the fact that V-Day is all about celebrating our loved ones. It doesn't have to be cheesy or characterised by grandeur; it should simply be a day which reminds our Everyday Valentines how much they mean to us, and this can also be achieved through small and non-extravagant gestures.
