Let's Talk Eurovision!

It's that time of the year. You either love it, or you hate it. But wherever you stand on the subject, it is the topic you cannot get away from this week. So, of course, we couldn't help but give our own opinion on all things Eurovision 2021!

Destiny - Je Me Casse

Let's start by talking about Malta's entry this year: Je Me Casse, sung by Destiny Chukunyere.

There's no denying it - the girl has got one of the strongest voices our little island has ever seen. Her belting is powerful, she's got an incredible range, and she's incredibly versatile. She can go from a soft ballad to transforming into a 21st-century pop diva, and she impresses every single time.

I have to admit, I was a bit sceptical when I first heard the song, mainly because it wasn't what I was expecting at all. But after seeing Destiny's live performances - especially her breathtaking rendition in Tuesday's Semi-Final - the choice of song was surprisingly genius. Let's be honest, if you heard the song on the radio for the first time, you would think it's a Top 10 single straight out of LA. It's fun, catchy, and pretty empowering, which is exactly what 2021 needs to be all about!

Favourites

While I am 100% rooting for Destiny and I definitely want to see Malta rising to the top of the scoreboard, there are obviously some other songs in the competition that I have been listening to on repeat.

My personal top 5 countries for this year's competition (excluding Malta, of course) are:

  1. Italy (Zitti E Buoni)

  2. Sweden (Voices)

  3. UK (Embers)

  4. Cyprus (El Diablo)

  5. The Netherlands (Birth Of A New Age)

Not gonna lie, I found it really hard to actually make that list; there are so many good songs this year!

Malta's Chances of Winning

It's no secret that Malta's never won the Eurovision Song Contest. And we've participated a lot. However, people have been saying that this could very well be the year we break our losing streak (though I'm pretty sure I've heard that said multiple times before).

At the time I'm writing this, it's being predicted that Malta will finish in second place on Saturday. The predictions have been fluctuating for a while now. 2 weeks ago, Malta was predicted as coming in first; last week, third; but Destiny's performance on Tuesday has boosted Malta's score quite a bit.

In my opinion, winning this year is definitely a possibility. But it always depends on next Saturday's votes. So fingers crossed!!

Needless to say, I am super excited for both tonight's and Saturday's show. Snacks will be had, dancing will be done, and a sing-along will definitely occur. I hope you're just as excited!
