Nostalgia and Chill: The Best Underrated Disney Movies

No matter the gender, age, sexual orientation, race, or favourite colour, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who has (a) never heard of Disney, (b) never seen a Disney movie or (c) doesn't secretly appreciate the cheesiness that comes with it. But what a lot of people tend to forget is that there's so much more to Disney than princess movies and High School Musical. Sure, those are the Toblerones and the Ferrero Rochers, but don't you sometimes find yourself craving just a basic Mars or Snickers?

So grab a quick snack because I'm bringing you the top 7 (in my highly unqualified opinion) underrated Disney movies - the Mars and Snickers of the Disney collection, if you will!

1: Freaky Friday (2003)

I knew I was going to love this movie before I'd ever watched it. The concept might be a bit overdone at this point, but considering this movie came out almost two decades ago, I think it's safe to say that it's still comedy gold. Jamie Lee Curtis is so freaking talented - and the chemistry between her and Lindsay Lohan is impeccable.

2. Jump In! (2007)

If I say that this is a feminist movie, you'd think it was about female empowerment and all that jazz. This movie isn't about that, but it does show the other - much less spoken about - part of feminism. Jump In! focuses on society's perception of 'masculinity', and how guys can get a lot of flack for doing something that's considered 'feminine'. Basically, it's a must-watch - for all genders, because it's a lesson we could all learn.

3. Double Teamed (2002)

Based on a true story, this movie depicts the story of Heather and Heidi Burge, teenagers on the road to basketball superstardom. A heartwarming movie about family, sports and dreams, this one definitely deserves a re/watch. It's also not overly cheesy (by Disney's standards), so perfect if you're a bit lactose intolerant.

4. Motocrossed (2001)

A much more traditional feminist movie - yes, this one does focus on female empowerment. Motocrossed makes you question the basis behind separating the genders when it comes to sports competitions. I mean, shouldn't competition simply be based on skill? I'm not going to start ranting about all that here, so if you haven't watched the movie yet, well, then you know what to do!

5. Parent Trap (1998)

Okay, this movie is a classic, not exactly underrated... But it's definitely not what most people think about when you mention Disney movies, is it? Nope. So I just had to put it in here because it's so good!

Dumb moment: when I'd first watched this movie as a kid, I had no idea that Hallie and Annie were played by the same actress... and I only found that out within the last couple of years.

6. Cadet Kelly (2002)

This one is definitely not for everyone - it's a cheese-infused chick flick starring a 14-year-old Hilary Duff. I recently re-watched it, and I wasn't really convinced at the beginning of the movie, but it broke me near the end. So I do recommend watching it - or re-watching it, if you already have - but don't come at me if you end up hating it!

7. Harriet the Spy (2010)

A very familiar face for any Disney Channel fan, Jennifer Stone (aka Harper from Wizards of Waverly Place) is the not-so-likable protagonist of Harriet the Spy: Blog Wars. It wouldn't be a Disney movie without some form of a moral, and so good old Harriet has to learn to do what she loves most without letting it get to her head. If you find Harriet as obnoxious as I did, don't worry - it does get better.

Okay, I get it, you're not sure which movie to start with, right? Don't fret, because you better bet that I've thought of a solution for that. Just take this quiz to get your very own underrated Disney movie recommendation:
